About the Society for Music Perception and Cognition 

Welcome to the website of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC), a non-profit organization for researchers and others interested in music perception and cognition.

The SMPC 2009 conference will be held at the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis from August 3-7, 2009, organized by Tonya Bergesen-Dana. The deadline for proposals is February 1, 2009. More information about the conference will be forthcoming soon.

The objectives of the Society

The Society for Music Perception and Cognition is a not-for-profit organization for researchers and others interested in music perception and cognition. The objectives of SMPC are

    • to further the scientific and scholarly understanding of music from a broad range of disciplines, including music theory, psychology, psychophysics, linguistics, neurology, neurophysiology, ethology, ethnomusicology, artificial intelligence, computer technology, physics and engineering;
    • to facilitate cooperation among scholars and scientists who are engaged in research in this interdisciplinary field; and
    • to advance education and public understanding of knowledge gained.

The activities of the Society

The Society hosts biennial Conferences to present new research in the area of music cognition. Information about SMPC 2009 will be available online soon. Information about the previous conference (SMPC 2007) is available online. The conference was held from July 30th to August 3rd, 2007 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Past meetings have been held in a variety of cities, hosted by different institutions. In addition, SMPC cooperates with other organizations in music cognition to host international conferences. The International Conference on Music Perception & Cognition (ICMPC), an associated international conference involving seven national societies is held on alternate years. ICMPC10 was held in Sapporo, Japan from Augest 25th to 29th, 2008. ICMPC 11 will be held at the University of Washington in Seattle from August 23-27, 2010, organized by Steven Demorest, Steven Morrison, and Patricia Shehan Campbell.
